Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
An ideal candidate for a rhinoplasty is someone who is in generally good physical health, doesn’t smoke, has finished facial growth/development, and has realistic goals in mind for their procedure.
If you do not meet all of these criteria you still may be eligible. The best way to determine candidacy for a rhinoplasty is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Santiago. He will review your medical history, goals, and more to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
What can a rhinoplasty help with?
A rhinoplasty can address:
Nose size relative to facial symmetry
Nose width at the bridge
The size and position of nostrils
Visible humps or dips in the bridge of the nose
Bulbous, drooping, hooked, or upturned nasal tips
Large or upturned nostrils, and
General nasal asymmetry
Rhinoplasty can also help with breathing impairments by addressing the cause of the obstructed airway, after carefully evaluating the nasal structure.
Is a rhinoplasty painful?
The severity of pain experienced will depend on techniques used, and Dr. Santiago always does his best to minimize patient discomfort. During the rhinoplasty, you will be completely asleep (under general anesthesia) and will not feel anything. After the procedure, patients can expect mild to moderate discomfort, but the doctor will typically prescribe pain medications to help manage any of these symptoms after the surgery.
How long is rhinoplasty recovery?
The average recovery period for a rhinoplasty is 7-10 days. Patients will have a nasal splint/cast on the nose for about a week. Most normal activity can be resumed after 1-2 weeks, but no exercise should be done for about a month. Swelling will continue for around 4-6 weeks. After about a month, the patient will begin to recognize their new nose. Full results can take a year or more to see as the face settles and heals, which is why Dr. Santiago puts an emphasis on long-term results.
How much does a rhinoplasty cost?
The cost of the procedure will vary depending on the extent of the rhinoplasty being performed. The cost is made up of 3 parts: the surgeon’s fee, the facility fee, and the anesthesiologist’s fee. Facility and anesthesia fees are external to the practice and therefore non-negotiable. They will also depend on the duration of the procedure. The surgeon’s fee will depend on the techniques used for each individual patient. After a consultation with Dr. Santiago, patients can expect to receive a quote with pricing.
Is Dr. Santiago board-certified?
Yes, and good question! It is important to select a board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure the upmost expertise, training, and quality of care.
How do I prepare for a rhinoplasty?
There are a few steps to prepare for a rhinoplasty, and Dr. Santiago will provide you with a full explanation and list after a consultation, in preparation for the procedure. In general, it is a good idea for patients to;
Stop smoking
Get a medical clearance from the primary care physician
Take or adjust your medication regime
Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, or herbal supplements that can increase bleeding
This list is not exhaustive, so be sure to follow instructions given to you by your doctor.
Will insurance cover my rhinoplasty cost?
If your rhinoplasty is for cosmetic reasons only (not to fix an obstructed airway, etc.) then your insurance will most likely consider it an elective procedure (aka not medically necessary) and will probably not cover the cost. If cost is a major concern, you can inquire with us about our different financing partners to look at payment plan options.
What is the difference between an open and closed rhinoplasty?
A closed rhinoplasty leaves behind minimal scarring as incisions are made inside the nose are not visible from the outside. In an open rhinoplasty there will be external scars visible, typically with small incisions made around the base of the nostrils. In your consultation, Dr. Santiago will be able to help you determine whether an open or closed rhinoplasty is the best option for your specific surgical goals.
